Tomahawk Cup race bike

Don’t know what the Tomahawk Cup is? read this! – http://www.mopedarmy.com/forums/read.php?1,3527560,page=1

These are the classes as they were hashed out and as they currently stand –

Stockish Class
=============
– No custom frames
– Pedals or Kickstart
– Stock Cylinder ONLY
– 15 mm carb limit
– Aftermarket pipe allowed
– Variated bikes allowed with no launch lever
– Any factory chassis or engine parts can be swapped to build a stock frankenbike.

Non-Variated Class
==========
– < 75cc Kits air cooled
– No carb limit
– 1 and 2 speeds
– Moped H20 < 50cc kits

Variated Class
==========
– < 75cc kits air cooled
– Bo carb limit
– Moped H20 < 50cc kits

Unlimited Class
===========
– < 99cc kits

While I have a billion projects, a few of which might be fun in some of those classes, I decided to do a Puch E50 build for the non-variated class. I have already done the crazy, complicated, weirdo concept super race bike thing for the Polini Cup all those years ago and was totally burned when no one showed up to race and the series got canceled, so I decided I would build something simple, easy and, most importantly, CHEAP to go racing with. Worst case scenario – this race circuit bombs like the Polini Cup and I have a super rad Maxi to rip around on that didn’t cost a bunch of money and end up too much a headache to put on the street (ala VX4).

Chris Paz hooked me up with a frame. Well, most of a frame. It’s going to need some stuff welded back on, namely some shock mounts, but it’s free and a rad platform to build on!

I may take his work further and cut the seatpost part of the frame off and just build something out of tube steel to sit on, I’m not sure yet.

Other parts I already have laying around are a set of E50 cases, a 17″ disk brake front wheel, a couple different french bike pipes to choose from (Doppler and Doppler clones, I think? Not much of a choice really.), and this thingy-

KTM 50 CDI, same setup I’ve been running on ciaociao for yeeeears. Mr. Naz up in Seattle built this for someone forever ago and I ended up with it.

It’ll be perfect!

My plan for the engine build is going to be a heavily ported Gila on that 77 stuffy crank with the 77 Super Clutch. I’m going to use a pull start, so I’ll ditch the stock starting bits and cut the starting plate off the clutch to lighten it up some. I’ve also got some clutch bell mods in store, as well as lightening the main gear. I’m going to balance all those bits too while I’m at it.
I’ll probably run one of the 24mm carbs I have laying around.

The new Garage will be out soon and I’ll be documenting the build over there, but I’ll link it up over here too when ever I have updates.

This should be a fun build! I can’t wait to get back on the track!

LAGUNA GPR Y’ALL

so it’s time for the laguna’s piston port to go.
every bolt holding that engine in was loose and covered in oil. the pipe was barely on there. this bike has had issues in the past with loosing exhaust nuts and i can see why, there’s not much room in there to get a wrench on anything! i would use those long allen nuts on this thing if i were going to keep the engine.
IMG_20130216_101500

having never removed the engine from a laguna, i didn’t realize the swing arm pivot bolt had to come out, and that the kickstand/rear engine bracket thing was all together. kinda neat? anyway, it all came out easy enough.
IMG_20130216_104544

new lump next to old lump. the gpr engine is quite a bit shorter.
IMG_20130216_104602

i set the engine in the frame to get a look at things. it fits nicely! this is going to be a piece of cake! with some simple plate brackets welded to the frame the engine will go right in. sprockets line up perfect.

IMG_20130216_105100

the engine is sitting in there a bit more forward than it will when it’s mounted i think, i have a ton of room to put it where i want to.
IMG_20130216_105125

so yeah, the engine with the puch gila kit, custom atomic mopeds intake and derbi pipe modified to fit the gila are all up for grabs. i’ll probably post it in the buy/sell on moped army soon, but friends get dibs (if you reading this i consider you my friend! probably).
also up for grabs are the laguna plastics. the left hand side plastic has the bottom tab broken off, but i think the tab is still bolted to the bike, so one could possibly plastic weld them back together.
IMG_20130216_111222

the engine looks right at home in the laguna. i love that it says derbi all over it too, once it’s all mounted it’ll look like it came this way from spain.

derbi laguna gpr

i moved my tool box upstairs into the moped shop area which allowed me to finally rip the engine out of the gpr. i didn’t get any pictures of that, but it was a bitch. remember the first time you tried to re-install the engine in a ciao? how frustrating and impossible that was? this was like that, but worse.
then i realized i was doing it wrong and the dumb thing came right out.
IMG_20130215_174711

i put the gpr in the corner and put the laguna up on my lift. that’s where things sit at the moment, but i think i’ll go in tomorrow and pull the engine out of it. it’ll be up for grabs if someone wants it, along with the pipe and probably a few other laguna goodies! get at me and we’ll talk money!
IMG_20130215_112751

the piston port moped engine is quite a bit longer than the gpr 6 speed lump, which means it should go in relatively easy with extra room inside the frame for the radiator.

some preliminary plans include a hand made sheet metal tail section that may include the exhaust baffle, possibly hand made sheet metal tins for the sides, and maybe even a mini fairing, similar to what it already has, but not broken and awkward.
a nice fork will be in the works, with a better front brake, maybe some handle bars instead of clip-ons. we’ll see!

oh man, i have so many fun projects going on!

SPARKLE BUTT puch maxi

there’s a kinda long story behind this maxi, and it kinda goes all over the place. i had a foxi (ktm style that accepts puch engines) that i was going to build for L. but the gas tank was so rotten that it was a total loss.
i had a little k-star e50 already built for it, and had most of the parts needed to build a complete bike laying around, just no frame.
latebirds of la were throwing a rally and my bff doug wanted to fly out to sf and take me and his west coast bike (a poopy derbi laguna) down to la to play. however, i had no working mopet and no money to get one of mine back on the road.
doug, being the total sweetie that he is, decided to take this newport frame he has hanging in his garage (in upstate new york, btw) and get it powdercoated all crazy rainbow darkness and ship it over to me, free of charge.

with doug’s frame i was able to throw together sparkle butt maxi, using the front end and rear shocks from black betty, the rear wheel for my moby 50cc race bike that hasn’t happened yet, bars from dirty, a borrowed hi-pipe from atomic andy, seat donated by the lovely dr.thomas and a slew of other random bits i had laying about.

we went to la and the rally kicked ass. sparkle butt, however, sucked ass. that pipe, you see, it meant for a high-strung 80cc dirt bike, not a not-even-ported kstar with a 19mm carb. i had no low end at all. once the thing finally got moving, though, the pipe would come on and it would book for being a not-even-ported kstar with a 19mm carb!

(_stole this picture from the late bird’s facebook page. dunno who took it_)

down hill it ripped!

a little while later it was creatures’ turn for a rally. andy took back his pipe and i traded the e50 bottom end for a za50. with the help of paz, i rebuilt the bottom end with a race crank, new bearings and paz shift pucks. flipped the first gear clutch and ported the cases for a gila.
i had a proma circuit pipe laying around that was meant for L’s foxi forever ago, and a 21mm carb left over from some other project. atomic andy made me an intake manifold and i was good to go.

this time the bike performed flawlessly. i threw some buddy pegs on and L and i ripped around sf on a post rally date with fellow dorados troy.

sparkle butt is now doug’s west coast ripper (till further notice) while i get silly on his poopy laguna. more on that in a later post.
